Hi Everybody,
We finally got around to making this public, in the hope that continued feedback from all you guys could help us solve this problem:
PimpFish simply won't show on certain Windows Vista machines
TRY THIS FIRST:
This is an update to the problem:
We have now created what we think is a fix
- But we need to get it tested out by cool people like yerself, so that we may ascertain whether our tinkerings have had the effect we're hoping for
To try out our new fix, please follow these simple steps:
1) First download our PimpFish Debug DLL
to your computer. You can save it anywhere, but the desktop might be a good place (so you can find it again) You can get it here:
http://www.pimpfish.com/download/fixpimpfish.zip
2) Unzip this file anywhere
3) Run the FixPimpFish.bat file
- This file will automate the process of applying our fix.
If you have UAC turned on, please rightclick the file and select
"Run as administrator"
Please follow all directions on screen.
4) Report the results back to us.
We tried to make the FixPimpFish script as foolproof as possible - But if you see errors at any time during the application of the fix, then sending back a description of what happened or a screenshot would be mighty helpful!
If everything went as planned and the PimpFish toolbar works for you now, then it is safe to delete the file you downloaded and the files you extracted from the zipfile (pimpfish.dll and FixPimpFish.bat)
If that didn't work, please let us know and then go through this:
The main problem here is that we have not been able to reliably reproduce this problem - But we have gotten lots of reports from users that it is indeed very real.
The symptoms are, as far as we can gather, as follows:
1) The toolbar isn't visible in Internet Explorer
2) Right-clicking on a blank area of the toolbars and selecting the PimpFish menu item - Or clicking on View --> Toolbars -->PimpFish does nothing at all.
3) Going to the Add-ons manager in IE7 lists the PimpFish toolbar and it is listed as enabled. That means that IE is aware of the PimpFish toolbar, and technically it should be running fine.
4) All files seem to be the correct versions and in-place - and reinstalls of PimpFish does not solve the problem.
5) Other toolbars such as Windows Live, and Google work just fine.
* Some users report that our old BETA worked fine for them
* Some users report that PimpFish worked fine for a while (in the newest version) and then stopped working suddenly.
Due to the way these symptoms add up - then we became rather convinced that it was a 3rd party application which was interfering with PimpFish - So we did a number of tests where we installed all sorts of application to see the effect on PimpFish, if any. During this process only ONCE have we seen the problem described above, but after a reboot of the machine everything worked as it should.
So we know that this problem exists - We just cannot for the life of us figure out how it is happening so consistently on a lot of peoples systems.
To try and figure this problem out further - We would very much like you all who have experienced this problem do these troubleshooting steps, and post your results here if you can:
f1) First try these general troubleshooting steps:
http://www.pimpfish.com/forum/1_64_0.html
f2) If none of that works, download and run the following Toolbar fix utility:
http://www.pimpfish.com/incoming/ToolbarRepair.Exe
First close down all instances of Internet Explorer - Then run this small application and check all the checkboxes and then click on repair. Start Internet Explorer again and see if you can enable the PimpFish toolbar.
If any of this works - Then please let us know. Also if you post here, then all and any information can be important - Such as what antivirus/antispyware utilities you have installled - And if you are one of the few who had it working and then it suddenly broke: What changes did you do to your system (if you can remember) between the time where it worked and when it broke?
Thanks so much - We're hoping you will help us out on this one!

Tried all suggestions with no success
.
In my case, it didn't work from the start - then later it mysteriously started working for a while (after I installed another toolbar - Windows Live) - but it subsequently quit working again.
The only toolbar I currently have installed is Google WebAccelerator - that is very recent (in the past week).
Antivirus = AVG Free Edition
Other programs which load at startup:
- Transcode 360
- Palm HotSync
- AnyDVD
- Vista Windows Sidebar
- Picasa2
- Yahoo Music Jukebox
- OneNote SideNote
In troubleshooting, I have disabled all startup items, without any change in results.
At one point, I reinstalled Vista, thinking this was a problem with IE (because there is no independent install for IE7 on Vista) - but that did not correct the problem either.

Hi,
I installed pimpfish on my Windows Media Center under Administrator Account. It works to my expectations. It also appears in my IE6 toolbar. However, I recently heard that it is safer to surf the net under Limited User Account. So I created a Limited User Account then log in as a Limited User Account, pimpfish no longer appears in my IE6 toolbar nor does it appear in my START Menu when I click the ALL PROGRAMS. I can only access it when I go to Windows Explorer, to the pimpfish directory and run the Downloader; but still there is no pimpfish tool bar in the IE6. Then I uninstall pimpfish using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM under Administrator Account and re-install under Administrator Account then log in as Limited User Account, the result is the same as describe above. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Additional Debugging Info:
Under the LIMITED USER ACCOUNT, pimpfish is not listed in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM LIST. Changing the LIMITED USER ACCOUNT to ADMINISTRATOR authority still doesn't show pimpfish in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM LIST. But changing to the account with ADMINISTRATOR authority that installed pimpfish, then pimpfish appears in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM LIST and also in the START Menu in ALL PROGRAMS list.

Hi Paksiw,
You should try to install PimpFish, if you can, while logged in to the limited user account. PimpFish is only "partially" installed for all users when you install using an administrator account - For best results, each user account should install PimpFish seperately.
If that doesn't work, due to the restrictions on the account, then there is not much you can do to get PimpFish working other than a manual registration of the PimpFish DLL and porting registry keys from the Admin account. This is a bit involved, so I will not detail the steps here unless necessary.
Thanks!

Cool
We'll be including this fix in our upcoming update (as mentioned) - so your confirmation makes us that more confident.
Thanks a lot for the feedback!

The first fix worked for me. I didn't have to do anything but restart IE7 and the Pimpfish toolbar was visible. Mine was a case of it once being visible then disappearing and refusing to reshow itself by clicking on the "show toolbar" menu even though it was listed there. I have a brand new Dell XPS with Vista. The only other add ons I'm running are Google and McAfee's Site Advisor.

The first fix "Run the FixPimpFish.bat file" worked for me.
Thanks a bunch!

This is an XP problem, but so similar to the Vista description I thought it might be helpful to include here.
Running XP SP2 Clean Install, IE7, FF2.0. Scrupulously malware free (run six antivirus programs). SpywareBlaster, BitDefender, and PrevxCSI load at startup.
I use two accounts, an administrator account and a limited privileges account for surfing (didn't see the previous post on this issue until I'd written this, but I think I've got a different wrinkle). After upgrading from Basic to PF 07 then installing the FireFox plugin, PF shows up fine on both browsers only in the administrative account. On the limited account, it appears in FF but not IE. After running the FixPimpFish DLL patch, the only change was that a PF entry now shows up when right clicking the tool bar when previously it hadn't. But checking PF yields no joy. (Incidentally, the FixPF patch ran under the limited account, which can't usually do installs). Also, after I first installed everything (before the DLL patch), my limited account became glacial and I had to bail out with Task Manager.
Working through the other fixes, PF does not show up in the Administrators Add/Remove programs section. It does appear in the Start>Programs list, but I notice the helpful uninstall item that came with the basic version is now gone. Running PF.msi installer again (from Admin account), it only gives options to Repair or Remove the app. Selecting Repair, everything appears to go nicely, but the problem remains in the limited account. Toggling the PimpFish entry in the right click toolbar entry has no effect. (It might be relevant to mention that I did not uninstall the FF plug-in before running the install again.)
Under the Limited Account, Tools>Manage Add-Ons> Enable or Disable Add-Ons, both the Toolbar and Browser Helper Object are enabled. This is an improvement since they weren't listed after the first install. (They may also have appeared after the DLL patch, but I didn't check).
OMG I want to die. Trying the next suggestion, moving the tool bars around, I discover that PF has been buried way over to the right. May I suggest that you move this fix a little more toward the top of the list?
I love my old, limited, free, Basic PF, but wanted to get fully tooled and step up to the pay plate. Now, too early in the morning, I'm having a hard time convincing myself not to take a giant step back. The new version doesn't work (even after trying a number of the tricky approaches you recommend) on a site I found troublesome with Basic, and the various experiments chew through my 200 free grabs like crazy. Blech. Still, overall, you've got a great app. Good luck with these buggys.
BTW, I tried earlier to register, but your anti-bot Human Authorization thing is fracked. It's one of the easiest I've seen, but blew me off six entries in a row. Didn't work until I came back seven hours later and hit the reset button after it denied me again.

Hi Q,
So we can conclude that there wasn't real buggyness on your system after all - But simply it was a case of the toolbar being well hidden?
If you want suggestions or more help on the site you mention, just send us a note via. our contact form.
Finally: Yeah the CAPTCHA on the forums is a bit dodgy sometimes (that's the one you refer to right?) - We'll see if we can't get it fixed.
Thanks!

Hi Arni, thanks for responding.
I think the first install was buggy, as evidenced by PF not appearing when I right clicked the toolbar, and it's absence from the Add/Remove Programs space. This was also the case for the Enable or Disable Add-Ons window, as PF was again MIA.
These problems all fixed either with running the DLL patch and/or the PFmsi installer again. My suggestion was that moving the Toolbars around just after the DLL patch or second PFmsi install would be a quicker way to ascertain if they had worked. It would also serve as a quicky check at the very top of the list before going on to the other checks.
Thanks again,
Mark
